Beauty of Wildlife

Michel Godimus, a French nature photographer, has spent more than a decade living in Japan. During this time, he has fallen in love with the land of Hokkaido, particularly the wildlife living on it. As a result, he has taken on the ambitious goal of documenting all the wildlife in that region.

A red fox sleeping in the snow, A Zosterops bird perching on a cherry branch, a unique albino squirrel carrying its pine cone, and graceful dancing Red-crowned cranes are some of the precious shots captured by Michel. These images are lively and beautiful representing the wonderful world that we live in. With a tender heart, Michel possesses tremendous skill and patience waiting to take those shots at just the right moment.

Michel’s vivid images have won accolades from National Geographic and other influential organizations. We are working with Michel to present to you the very selective images of the wildlife in Hokkaido.

Michel Godimus

I am a nature photographer based in Japan. Even as a child I have always loved nature, finding myself submerged in there and tried to be part of it a little bit more in order to be able to observe the different inhabitants of this nature without making them feel the slightest threat and trying to be seen by them just as a simple but a little bit curious neighbor. Despite the closeness with certain animals sometimes, I always try to keep in mind that I am just a stranger, a guest in their home.

Being able to watch and make intimate and stealthy moments eternal is what motivates me the most. see and feel a mother’s love for her cubs, the unerring love of a couple overcoming hardships together, a struggle for survival, a merciless hunt, a final sacrifice for the survival of the next generation…To live this kind of moment is to forget the superfluous, the futile obstacles of modern society and to surrender to nature, to concentrate on the essential, this world to which we owe everything and that we should take the time to observe and protect for our children.

Beauty in the Jungle

Deep inside remote tropical jungles, such as Ankasa Conservation Area, Ghana, or Sumatra Island, Indonesia, primate researcher Guilhem Duvot has discovered fascinating insects hiding in trees and grass (e.g., a cricket camouflaging itself as a dead leaf, a grasshopper of vibrant color). Guilhem has painstakingly captured amazing images of these surprising little insects which we would otherwise never be able to see.

Over the years, Guilhem has lived in these jungles primarily to study primates. In order to win the trust of these primates, he had to camp near to them so that he could make first-hand observations. While making his observations, Guilhem could not help but notice other beautiful creatures living around him. So he picked up his camera and started photographing the amazon life inside tropical forests.

His stunning images have awed many people. Notably, his photograph titled “Dead leaf or almost” was shortlisted for the UK Royal Society of Biology′s 2018 Amazing Annual Photo Contest.

Guilhem’s love and concern for our planet Earth are evident in his wonderful photos and we are happy to present them to you.

Photographer G. Duvot

My name is Guilhem. I am from Toulouse, France.
Since early childhood, I have been a naturalist at heart. By naturalist, I mean that I enjoy exploring, observing, and understanding nature more than anything. Following this passion, I studied ecology, and soon after completing my studies, I decided to volunteer for scientific missions. These various projects mainly aimed at studying and protecting the rapidly declining biodiversity all over the globe.

These appointments led me to live and work in incredible, remote wild places – mainly tropical forests – where I would daily see natural wonders that only a few lucky people have witnessed. Realizing that, I thought this was worth being shared and that is how I came to photography in 2015. I started it as I was living in the deep, mysterious forests of the immense Congo basin studying bonobo behaviour, following them daily in their environment. I spent one year in the middle of the jungle with a bad zoom lens, a moldy old book on photography, a lot of time to observe, and nature offering infinite inspiration. I had everything I needed to start my new passion and it quickly turned out to be the best tool I ever had to express and share my vision of life.

Since then, images became very important to me. I discovered that it was also a great way to communicate with people and sensitize the public about environmental issues.

Our lives have become more and more frantic, always out of time, we always have to be faster, more productive, the leitmotiv is « growth » and indeed, the upcoming disaster is growing. My photography follows the opposite philosophy. With my pictures, I want to show how important it is to take the time to observe what surrounds us, reconnect with our environment and to understand it, to be conscious and respect all the living beings that share the planet with us. If my photography had only one aim — other than the joy it brings me — it would be to awaken or stir people’s curiosity and interest in nature, as a first step leading to respect and to protect our environment. Once you understand nature you can only respect it and want it preserved, and a true understanding means accepting its mysteries and the fact we can’t control or know everything.

Artistically speaking, I don’t aim at technical perfection. I don’t plan my shootings for the perfect image. I don’t look for the spectacular. However, I use light and environmental elements to create a composition that emphasizes the chosen subject.

My approach is simple: I like to take the time to wander out in nature, as discreet as possible with alert senses, observe and look for the details, ready to capture anything that would catch my eye. I like to think that nature is the artist, I just learned how to read its creation and use photography to immortalize a selected part of it according to my perception. The subjects are everywhere, it’s all about patience, observation, and composing/improvising with the given elements.

Andrei Savitsky

Curiosity about the life forms seen under the microscope of Andrei Savitsky has lately swept several prestigious micrography competitions around the world, including the 2019 Nikon’s Small World Photomicrography Competition. Andrei has an eye for colors and forms so his images seamlessly bridge the gulf between the two genres: art and science. Furthermore, Andrei’s relentless drive in microscopy has allowed him to produce a wide range of images spanning from insects, single cell creatures, to plants in just a few years; Andrei is capable of rendering the very small with sharp details and colorful formations. His stunning and mesmerizing images open people’s awareness to the incredible diversity, beauty, and ingenuity of life on planet Earth.

Andrei’s unyielding enthusiasm and creativity have allowed him to employ innovative ways to reexamine life forms. For example, Andrei has looked at the cross-section stems among various plants, including Tulip, Acacia, and Mulberry under his microscope. He has also turned his focus to various parts of insects. These detailed images let us see the innate beauty of nature on a scale that we normally cannot see. With Andrei’s permission, Art.Planetfinds is proud to present Andrei’s unique and sensational images.

My name is Andrei Savitsky. I was born in Ukraine in 1995 and I still live here. I graduated from a technical college, but when I was given a microscope in early 2017, it completely changed my interests. It was a very old, simple Soviet microscope, but I was so caught up in the microscopy that I couldn’t tear myself away from it. Everything I saw under the microscope surprised me and I wanted to share these emotions with others, so I decided to take pictures of them on my smartphone. I began to communicate with other microscopists and tried to make the same beautiful photos as they do. Over time, I began to learn a lot of new techniques and methods and as a result, the quality of my photos greatly increased. After that, I began to take part in various competitions. I have won numerous awards at various prestigious competitions: Nikon’s Small World 2019, Microscopy Today Micrograph Awards 2020, Close-up Photographer of the Year 2020, to name a few. Thanks to these victories, I was able to purchase a professional microscope and camera, enabling me to reach new levels of shooting.

Beauty of Ice Formations

The intriguing geometric ice formations captured by Ryota “Kaji” Kajita reveal striking juxtapositions of white snow and ice against dark frozen water. These formations reveal the innate beauty of nature hidden in the Alaskan interior. They represent the embodiment of “Zen” according to Mr. Kajita because they are part of the natural cycle — subtle, ephemeral, and transient.

Ten years ago, during an excursion to the tundra, Mr. Kajita accidentally stumbled upon these icy structures and immediately fell in love with them. They are formed when methane and carbon dioxide become trapped beneath the surface of frozen lakes. Ever since discovering these marvels of nature he has been working on his astounding “Ice Formation” series. Each year, before the first snows arrive, he explores the wild looking for these ice formations, enduring incredibly low temperatures while watching out for precarious frozen waters. Opportunities to photograph these formations are limited to one or two weeks out of the year, and sometimes he cannot photograph any of them at all because of the timing of the first heavy snow.

Mr. Kajita’s “Ice Formation” series offers a perfect example of how delicate and precious nature can be. They are rare, and difficult to reach, but capture the unbelievable beauty of our world. It is thanks to Mr. Kajita that we can share these experiences of the astounding Alaskan landscape.
